Beyond Survival

The path to prosperity requires effort beyond what any one person is capable of.

A young mother’s passion for education

Auishi (pronounced Oishi) is a 30-year-old mother of two. Her daughter, 12-year-old Yeashfi, loves to learn English and study the Quran. She’s already memorized 2 Parahs and wants to be an English teacher when she grows up. And 6-year-old Zarir… well, he’s a six-year-old boy so all he has on his mind is play.

As a young girl, Auishi’s father stopped making payments for her schooling. It’s common for a girl’s education to be the first thing sacrificed when times are tough. Desperate, she sought out her uncle from overseas to help finish High School.

She, like plenty of girls in her community, could have accepted her fate and settle for relying on men like her father or uncle to define her life. Instead, she finished High School and began tutoring the poor girls around her area who couldn’t afford to go to school like she was able to.

Years later, her daughter is faced with a similar situation: To settle because the men in her life did not want to go out of their way. Aushi feels blessed for the basic education she has received and appreciates how much that little bit has contributed to her life. She wants more for her children than she has had. She wants them to be comfortable with English and wiser than she has been in the past.

“A mother’s love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity. It dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path“

Agatha Christie
